Most people today practice some sort of hair removal, though the methods most often used produce only temporary results. Often, unwanted hair in highly visible areas must be removed on a daily basis by shaving or at least on a regular basis by waxing, plucking, or using a depilatory cream. Advances in the field of cosmetic dermatology have brought a new and improved method of hair removal – one that can produce permanent results: laser treatment. In our Stafford and Arlington offices, we are happy to help patients achieve their desired results using proven laser hair removal technology. This treatment can be applied to unwanted hair on various parts of the body such as the face, chest, underarms, arms, back, bikini area, and legs.
How laser hair removal works
Different from shaving, waxing, or plucking, laser hair removal applies light energy to hair follicles. This energy is absorbed by the pigment in hair. The heat renders the follicle incapable of ongoing production. Because energy is absorbed by pigment, gray hair cannot be removed, and lighter colored hair may require more treatment sessions than darker colored hair. Optimal results are also achieved when skin is at its lightest. Tanned skin, which is more pigmented, can limit results.
Although it seems as though hair is continually growing, there are phases that each hair goes through, some of which are active and some are not. Laser hair removal affects the hair that is in the active growth phase. Hair that is in the resting phase does not absorb light energy. It is for this reason that multiple sessions are required in order to eliminate all unwanted hair in a treatment area. Most patients realize a significant reduction after about six treatments in our state-of-the-art dermatology center. To maintain the smoothest possible skin, patients are encouraged to receive touch up treatments on an annual basis.
