What To Expect: Mohs Surgery In Washington DC

Skin cancer can be removed using one of several surgical techniques. The best method is decided on a case-by-case basis, though Mohs Micrographic surgery has a number of advantages for many patients. It has the highest cure rate, and leaves the smallest scar, of any available technique. Mohs is typically recommended for aggressive cancers and those occurring in cosmetically sensitive areas.

Preparation

A good night’s sleep is the only preparation required for patients undergoing Mohs surgery. You will be able to eat breakfast as normal on the day of your appointment. It is important to discuss any medications that you take regularly with Dr. Neal during your initial consultation. He may advise you to stop taking any products containing aspirin at least one week before your surgery, because they increase bleeding. On the day of your appointment, you should take your regular medications (if any), unless you have been instructed otherwise.

It is advisable to wear comfortable clothing, including a button-up shirt. We ask that you forgo cosmetics and jewelry. You should clear your schedule for the day, and bring a lunch as well as reading material to help you pass the time. We recommend bringing someone with you to keep you company, and drive you home after the surgery.

Surgery

Dr. Neal and his friendly staff will make every effort to keep you comfortable throughout your visit. We understand that this is a stressful time, and we are here for you as friends as well as health care providers. Soon after you arrive, we will show you to a comfortable treatment room and administer a local anesthetic.

When you are comfortable and the treatment area is completely numb, Dr. Neal will begin by removing a very thin layer of tissue around the tumor. The area is bandaged, and you can return to our reception area while the doctor analyzes the tissue sample, to determine exactly where cancerous cells are present. You will then return to the treatment room, and another thin layer of tissue will be removed, targeting the precise location of the cancer. The process is repeated until all traces of cancer are gone. Dr. Neal will determine the best way to close the wound, depending on the size, depth, and location. You will be provided with detailed aftercare instructions.

Dr. Neal has completed extensive training beyond the requirements for fellowship, and successfully treated thousands of patients with the Mohs surgery technique.
